‘A fine line between insanity and religion’

Maryland author Dale Lisi is a USCG Licensed Captain for Foolish
Pleasures (Charter and Bounty Fishing) as featured on National
Geographic reality television show ‘Wicked Tuna Outer Banks.’ In this,
his debut publication, he brings his life’s experiences  - teenage drug
use and ‘manipulation,’ overdoses of PCP and LSD, and most
significantly his boating accident resulting in the tragic loss of an arm
followed by travels to odd remote regions in search for the answers to
the meaning of life (and the arm he was missing!) – all of this supplies
the energetic fuel for this book on seeking understanding of religion
and God.

Typical of Dale’s fine writing skills, his own mission is well stated in his
words: ‘The closest we can get to the flame without getting burned is
where we want to be. From our beginning on this earth until our end,
we are warned about these things that we all desperately pursue and
glorify (some in secret, some boasting) as we constantly attempt to
partake in them while at the same time trying to elude their worth,
constantly feeding this addiction to entertainment, from Hollywood, to
drugs, to the act of sinning. I have always made horrible decisions,
never believing anything until it was too late, and to make matters
worse, I was overrun with the desire for the ‘extreme.’ Ever since I can
remember, I was completely captivated by just about everything I was
told not to do and did many things many times out of dares I posed to
myself, from skateboarding to riding bikes and motorcycles, from
smoking cigarettes to drinking alcohol, from using marijuana, LSD, and
Cocaine all the way to doing PCP, where I would find satisfaction at a
price and a label that would never go away like a Scarlet Letter. ‘It’s
easier to ask for forgiveness than to beg for permission.”

Dale’s search for God spins a fascinating journey for understanding of
the dichotomy between good and evil, and indeed for understanding
God. He offers, ‘In this day and age, we would rather put our hopes
and beliefs into lies, desperately attempting to make them real,
glorifying emotions, feeling, and erotic experiences, placing our power
into coins and paper, hungering for them with all our being.’ And then
he reflects, ‘Man wants so badly to come up with his own explanation
for things with his microscopes, telescopes, probes, and potions, but
he can only study matter with these tools. He can’t study its intent, and
some things you can’t understand if you are not willing to accept where
they have come from.’ He then adjures, ‘“This is just my interpretation
of the oldest book in the world.’

There are many books about man’s search for meaning, but few have
been delivered in the raw yet poetic and erudite tone Dale achieves in
GOOD & EVIL. His closing comment sums the discovery well: ‘‘The
meaning of life is to learn the difference between good and evil and to
make the choice of what you wish to be a part of for eternity; beyond
that, there is no meaning.’ He somehow makes it all make sense – a
major achievement in our current trying times! Grady Harp, December

Good and Evil contained Dale Lisi's life story and lessons about God and life. He began his quest and inquiry about God after he lost his arm in a boat accident. The pursuit and study of God was a way to regain his lost arm. The book provided a detailed narration of the quest and explanations of the lessons learned in the process.

This book is quite impressive; it paints clear images in the reader’s mind. It is a book with no form of suspense — I don’t have any problem with that, though. What the author reveals makes the book a scary but interesting one. The book corrects and educates humans on the miseries of life, making the book stand out from many other religion-related materials. I must commend the author for hitting the nail on the head; he points out man's weaknesses without condemnation or prejudice.

I applaud the author's writing skills. I have read a couple of religious books in recent times and have been utterly disappointed. Most of these books were more about projecting the religion than building on a story that would get the reader to think deep. I usually have difficulty understanding the themes of these other religious books. But, Dale Lisi showed me in this book that a religion-centered book could also appeal to everyone. He did well to cater to the reading needs of both religious and non-religious readers. He showed the utmost respect when talking about people of a different faith. Most importantly, there was a story to follow and lessons to learn from the book.

Good and Evil had a central message which the author drove home effectively. He was intentional in his message and communicated it exhaustively. I believed he covered every aspect of his thoughts. The author didn't try to patronize the reader with words. On the contrary, he used words in their most raw forms to pass across his message.

The author turned his experiences into a journal and expository tool. He gave us a clear lecture on hard drugs — the different types of drugs, what they do, how to use them, and even their advantages and disadvantages. Through the book, he effectively exposed all the devil's strategies to bring man to eternal damnation through man's flesh.

I only found one error in the book, and it wasn't enough to take away any point. The book was exceptionally written and professionally edited. I'd rate it four out of four stars. I'd recommend this book specifically to anyone who enjoys a religion-centered biography with its foundations on Christianity. However, people opposed to religion could also read it as there wasn't any prejudice in the narrative.

This book is an immensely personal story of one man’s trials and wild tribulations. It’s a great read that opens your eyes about life and one’s journey learning about God. An excellent read. In today’s bubble-wrapped world where everyone gets a trophy, it’s great to read a story of overcoming true adversity.” Phil R.
